When applying eye make-up, I almost always apply some color in my crease. I use the brush in a back and forth sweeping motion, starting from the outer portion of my eye (think windshield wiper), and you can go over as little or many times as needed.
I usually work in colors of 3 when applying eye shadow ranging from light to medium to dark. The medium color is the one that I sweep into the crease. I will brush on the eye shadow a bit above the actual crease to help pull the eye “up”. When I’m wanting a softer, natural look, I will use a light tan to nude color for the crease.
