In several inspiration photos that I have saved from various magazines, Pinterest, Blogs, etc. there was a reoccurring theme - black interior doors. I loved how bold and chic they looked in all of the pictures. The inside of our front door was a stained cherry wood that I was not too fond of. It was a little too traditional for our home. We were also in the process of making over our stained oak cabinets in the kitchen so I thought it was the perfect time to get rid of all the dated, stained wood in the other parts of our house, including the stair rail.
You would have thought that I lost my mind when I told Jett my idea; he was certain that this was the "craziest" idea yet. I then started to flood his e-mail with the pictures that inspired me in the first place, and he slowly started to come around. Then one afternoon, out of the blue, he says, "So, do you know what kind of paint we need to get for the front door?" I nearly fainted! I was dying to know what changed his mind; he drove around the neighborhood and saw exterior doors painted black and thought they looked good :) I'll take it!
So... after Jett's nice Sunday drive through the neighborhood we were off to buy the paint and we called the painter on the way!
Here are some before pictures of the door and stair rail. I did not realize how crappy the pictures were until it was too late:
After two days we had a new house (at least it felt like it). It really is amazing how much of a transformation painting the rail and door made.
Here are some after photos. I had the hardest time getting a good picture of the front door with the lighting (I definitely need a lot of help in the photography dept):
Please ignore the rug by the front door; that is for a whole other day and post.
